**This is a work in progress. You probably want a daughter site. Ask Richard for details.**

This website was created using a system called Qwkzit. For security and other purposes Qwkzit has its own method for establishing the authority of administrators, site editors and (if needed) other users. This involves undertaking a series of clicks (or taps) to form a pattern. It has a superficial resemblance to the patterns uses for verification on some touch screen devices but is actually quite different. For one thing, the lines must not be "dragged out" and for another there is no need for a pre-defined framework of dots.

Think of a queen on a chess board. If nothing is in the way she can travel in any of eight directions. Think of them as North, North East, East, South East, South, South West, West and North West on a compass dial. However far the Queen travels it counts as one "move", after which she must be put down. But (unlike a knight, say) she cannot deviate from a straight line in a single move. Similarly, Qwkzit authentication uses "moves" in eight directions, though being slightly away from a "perfect" compass direction does not matter and the length of a move is not important.

A Qwkzit pattern starts with a click or tap - pretty much anywhere - and each move (or "line") must end with a click (or tap). In fact, to provide more choice and make guessing more difficult, more than one click is permissible at any point and that number matters. No "trace" or anything else is shown on screen while tapping out a pattern, though occasionally something on screen may get temporarily highlighted.

There is no problem with returning (via appropriate compass-direction moves) to click on a previously used position. In fact, it is encouraged. Also, two or three consecutive moves can be in the same direction. More is possible but you may run out of screen space!

Now for some examples. It is useful to have a mental picture of a shape. If it is a letter, say, we may need to distort it somewhat to be made up of straight lines in the "compass" directions as these are:

          NW      N      NE

          W       X       E

          SW      S      SE

Let us have a game of fives. That seems a good number though not essential!

          #       #       #       #       #

          #       #       #       #       #

          #       #       #       #       #

          #       #       #       #       #

          #       #       #       #       #

Move only up, down, left, right or at 45 degrees. Click only on # symbols, though you may pass over them without clicking unless changing direction. You may click two or three times on the same # before moving on but if so pause momentarily between clicks to avoid your action being taken as a "double click". Moving back onto a previous click location (if only moving horizontally, vertically or diagonally) is fine, as is repeating a previous "path".

Can you remember what you did and repeat it?

End.
